What do you see when you go out your front door and look to your right or left? Is it just a house next door? Are the roots of that old oak tree deeply rooted in the soil, strengthening the ground for everyone?

Being a good neighbor means they care for their property in a way that benefits the whole street, watch out for others, and contribute to the overall health and beauty of the neighborhood. It's a deep-rooted care and commitment to shared well-being that defines a great neighbor – and it captures the essence of the last 100 years of community banking at PCB.

As a community bank driven to facilitate financial success for customers, encourage professional success for team members, and stimulate community economic growth, we are grateful to those who help us make a meaningful difference every day. This post celebrates a century of commitment to our core values and being a trusted neighbor you can bank on.

Utmost Integrity

Operating with utmost integrity is paramount for PCB, a value deeply shared with its parent company, Allegheny Bancshares, Inc. This principle is clearly reflected in their commitment to strong investor relations. Put simply, this means being transparent and honest in communications with the bank's shareholders. Trustworthiness, essential for being the neighbor you can bank on, stems from honesty. Similarly, transparent and ethical dialogue with investors demonstrates the bank's accountability and integrity up to the highest level.

This integrity resonates with and builds genuine trust, which is evident in accolades like being voted Best Bank in West Virginia – a powerful reflection of the confidence PCB has earned within the communities it serves. It's another layer showing that the integrity PCB displays locally is part of its essential character.

Customer Driven

At the heart of PCB's customer driven value is a genuine partnership with the people they serve. Helping customers succeed is the goal, and this partnership is evident across the bank. From developing new products and services – like upgrading the bank's online and digital banking platform – that address customers' changing needs to simply celebrating them with special appreciation events, PCB focuses on providing proactive support.

This customer-first approach shapes their products and sometimes leads to inspiring stories like these:

  • Our work with The UPS Store of Beckley, WV, is community building in action – providing banking support so they can deliver crucial services that drive local business success and efficiency.

  • By supporting local businesses like Sure Clean Laundries of Welch, WV, we help ensure vital services, such as reliable laundry facilities, remain a convenient and accessible part of our community fabric.

  • Building a stronger Shenandoah Valley, literally and figuratively. Our partnership combines Stoneburner's 60+ years of expertise in quality building materials with our shared commitment to fostering local growth.

  • A healthy community thrives through the expansion of Pocahontas Memorial Hospital's ER and OR suite. PCB helped finance the enhanced medical services and the creation of new local jobs – a win-win for Pocahontas County.

  • When emergencies strike, every second matters. That's why PCB proudly partners with West Hardy EMS, helping ensure this vital nonprofit lifeline has the support needed to answer the call and provide critical care throughout our community.

  • Ambition meets opportunity in Harrisonburg-Rockingham. When C.L. Custer set its sights on expansion, a tailored financial partnership with PCB helped provide the fuel needed to turn vision into reality.

Team Member Focused

PCB's commitment doesn't stop with customers or community projects—it extends inward to the very heart of the bank, its team members. Being team member focused means fostering a supportive environment where employees feel valued, heard, and empowered.

Why is this crucial for community commitment? Because PCB's team members are part of the community. They are neighbors, friends, and family living right here. When the bank invests in its team, it’s also investing in the community's fabric.

This focus often translates into action through employee volunteerism. PCB actively encourages and supports its team members in giving back their time and talents. You'll usually find familiar faces from the bank volunteering at school functions, local festivals, and charity drives – rolling up their sleeves alongside their neighbors because they genuinely care, supported by an employer who values that commitment.

Further demonstrating this dedication, in 2023, PCB established the "All In for Team Members" program. This initiative honors team members who exemplify PCB's values monthly and lead by example within the organization. The program not only rewards these dedicated individuals with various incentives but, significantly, also includes a financial contribution directed by the awardee to the local nonprofit organization of their choice. This powerfully connects team member recognition directly to community support, amplifying the positive impact.

Ultimately, being team member focused ensures that the people serving you are valued, supported, and genuinely connected to the community’s well-being.

Community Centered

At the core of PCB's identity and the heart of what it means to be a community bank is the value of being community centered. This focus on reinvesting in the local area isn't just a philosophy; fundamentally, community banks are actively measured on their local impact through regulations like the Community Reinvestment Act (CRA). For PCB, however, being community centered goes far beyond meeting expectations; it embodies the spirit of being an active, engaged partner in the community's life and future. It means actively listening to local needs, investing resources in the area, and participating in initiatives that help our neighborhoods thrive.

This commitment takes many forms. One of the most direct ways PCB acts on this value is through consistent financial support for local causes. The bank regularly contributes to vital nonprofits doing essential work, sponsors beloved community events that bring people together (like local festivals, school fundraisers, or youth sports), and supports initiatives that enrich the quality of life for everyone. It’s about strategically reinvesting resources where they can make a tangible difference, strengthening the organizations that form the backbone of our community.

Beyond donations, PCB builds deeper, strategic relationships—for example, PCB’s partnership with West Virginia University Institute of Technology. As the Communiversity Partner, PCB helps people reach their educational and financial goals in the community through improved access to products and services through technology.

Actions like providing financial support through donations, building strategic partnerships like the Communiversity initiative, and offering practical solutions like mobile ATM services for community events – are all hallmarks of what it means to be truly community centered. It’s about showing up, sharing resources, and actively participating in the well-being of the places we call home.
